About The Saratoga/Southbay American Pit Bull Terrier Meetup Group

Hiking/Walking dogs together is a natural alliance builder, reducing tension and promoting dog-to-dog sociability. It is also a great way to keep dogs in shape, their minds stimulated and their energy level at bay. Not to mention the benefits such exercise gives the owner, as well as the camaraderie that one experiences through fellowship with other Bully enthusiasts.

Suggestions:

1. Wear your best hiking/walking shoes
2. Dress comfortably (layers, in case the weather varies from woods to street)
3. Equip your canine companion w/ a comfortable collar and leash that allows you complete control
4. Canine clothing if necessary (Pitbulls can me more susceptible to cooler weather conditions because of their lack of undercoat)
5. Water (for dog and human)
6. Pea sized training treats can be very helpful as a positive reinforcement technique that helps one encourage proper behaviors in the face of new situations that may be unsettling for the dog. Treats carried in a pouch or other alternative container that is easily accessible is a good way of encouraging and promoting such behavior on a daily basis. (You may not want to overfeed your dog that morning, save some stomach room for the use of food treats to tempt him into positive behaviors if need be!
!)

Remember: Not all dogs will be "social" with other dogs, but hiking does provide a natural way to reduce tension in dog-to-dog encounters by providing a constant flow of natural movement & energy; keeping the mind focused, yet relaxed. Hiking dogs side-by-side/or with a measured amount of distance between each dog does foster a healthy amount of pack orientation and positive associations with other dogs; also giving the owner of each dog a certain amount of control through the use of the leash, environmental distractions, space and distance with the added benefit of a bonding experience for both dog and owner alike.

Hope to meet you & your canine buddy soon! Please, tell us a little about yourself, answer "the questions" & post a picture: we would love to get to know youlaughing

winkRegards, Tracey "Pitbull Passionista!"
